Brazilian Luiz Fernando Iubel has been appointed as Liverpool’s new Individual Development Lead Coach.

The 36-year-old joins from Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro, where he was Assistant and also focused on the transition of players from the Academy to first team.

He joins Liverpool on September 1st after being granted a work permit and will work across Liverpool’s First Team, Under-21s and U18s, as well as with the club’s youngsters who are out on loan.

Iubel’s arrival means Aaron Briggs, the previous Individual Development Coach, now becomes Liverpool’s dedicated Set Piece Coach. Liverpool advertised for a specialist Set Piece Coach last summer, but were unable to find the candidate they wanted, and Briggs took on the role.

Liverpool were pleased with his performance and Briggs,  who joined from German side Wolfsburg in July 2024, now takes on the position full-time.

Liverpool have a long history of specialist individual development coaching.  Pep Lijnders joined the club as a Development Coach in 2014, working under Brendan Rodgers and then Jurgen Klopp, before rising to become a highly influential Assistant.

Vitor Matos was then appointed as Elite Development Coach in 2019 and stayed in the role for five years, also growing in influence and importance.

Speaking on Episode #66 of the TGG Podcast, Matos described the role as “taking care of the players that were between the first team and the second team” and also ensuring a unified playing methodology between the First Team and PDP phase.
