GUS WILLIAMS is stepping down as Blackburn Rovers’ Head of Recruitment after six months to return to the Football Association of Wales (FAW).

Williams joined Rovers in August after 22 years with the FAW, where he was National Talent ID Manager. He will now return to that role.

Rovers’ Director of Football Gregg Broughton said: “We would like to put on record our thanks to Gus for his work behind the scenes at Blackburn Rovers.

“Over the last six months, he has had to rebuild a recruitment department, from covering the UK to now covering Europe and emerging talent, and to one that has systems dedicated to ensuring data is at the centre of all decisions.

“Gus’ work leaves a legacy for his successor to build on and Blackburn Rovers will gain the benefits of that in years to come.”

Rovers said their “search for a successor is now underway” and that they would “make a further announcement in due course.”

In December, Blackburn unveiled their new-look recruitment team, which had been put together by Broughton and Williams.

FAW CEO Noel Mooney added: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Gus back to the FAW where he will continue his journey to find Cymru the best possible players.

“Gus has been a huge part of our success and he will once again be central to our future successes.”

FAW Chief Football Officer David Adams said: “We are delighted that Gus is returning to the FAW. He’s been part of our history in identifying young talented players and supporting their journey to our Cymru National Team.

“We must continue to work effectively within the professional game eco system to secure eligible Welsh football talent for the continued success of our National Teams. Gus will play an important role in this endeavour.”
