FORMER Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has replaced Chris Powell as one of Gareth Southgate's assistants for England's upcoming Euro 2024 campaign.

As TGG reported last week, Powell has left Southgate’s staff to return full-time to his role as Head of Coaching for the Professional Development Phase at Tottenham.

Powell, who played alongside Southgate for Crystal Palace’s youth teams, had worked with England at both Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup. Following his departure, Southgate has now turned to another former team-mate.

The England manager played alongside Hasselbaink at Middlesbrough and has remained in contact with the Dutchman ever since.

Hasselbaink, 50, is a UEFA Pro Licence holder who has managed clubs including Royal Antwerp, QPR and Northampton Town. His last role, at Burton Albion, came to an end when he resigned last September with his side bottom of League One. It was his second stint with the club, having previously guided them to promotion from League Two in 201/15.

England defender Ben Chilwell said: “It’s really really good to gave him with us. He’s obviously a vastly experienced player who has played a lot of big games in the Premier League, especially for Chelsea.

“I have seem him a lot at Chelsea games and he’s a great guy, on and off the pitch. We are very lucky to have him here with us.”

England face Italy in their first Euro 2024 qualifier tomorrow (March 23rd), before taking on Ukraine on Sunday.
