FORMER Celtic and West Brom Technical Director Nick Hammond has been appointed as a transfer consultant by Newcastle United on a short-term contract.

The appointment is acknowledgement by the club’s new Saudi Arabia-backed owners that they will not have a permanent Technical Director in place for the crucial January transfer window. Earlier this month there were reports that former Chelsea man Michael Emenalo had turned the job down, although Chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan insisted he had never been offered it.

Hammond built a stellar reputation during 16 years at Reading, during which time he was Academy Director for three years and Director of Football for 13.

In April 2016 he joined West Brom as Technical Director, but was sacked in April 2018 following a dismal season in the Premier League for the Baggies. He joined Scottish giants Celtic as Head of Football Operations July 2019 and left in March this year.
