Ruben Amorim has confirmed his backroom staff at Manchester United, with five Sporting Lisbon coaches joining him at the Old Trafford club.

Last week, TGG reported that four staff had left Old Trafford following the arrival of the club’s new Portuguese Head Coach. The quartet were Assistants Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake, Goalkeeper Coach Jelle ten Rouwelaar and  Performance Analyst Pieter Morel.

Now five coaches, all Portuguese, have come in with compatriot Amorim: Assistant Carlos Fernandes, Goalkeeper Coach Jorge Vital, First-Team Coaches Adelio Candido and Emanuel Ferro and Physical Performance Coach Paulo Barreira.

They will join First-Team Coaches Darren Fletcher and Andreas Georgson and Assistant Goalkeeper Coach Craig Mawson at Old Trafford. Here is some more information on the four newcomers:

  • Carlos Fernandes (Assistant): Amorim’s right-hand man and just 29 when he joined United in November 2024. Worked as a coach at Benfica’s Academy when Amorim was a player in the first team and then became his Assistant at Braga, Casa Pia and Sporting Lisbon.
  • Jorge Vital (Goalkeeper Coach): First worked with Amorim at Braga, when United’s future Head Coach was a player and then coach at the club. Moved with him to Sporting in 2020.
  • Adelio Candido (First-Team Coach): Was U15s coach at Casa Pia and rose up the ranks to work with Amorim for the first team. Went with him to work at Braga and Sporting. Only 28 at time of joining United.
  • Emanuel Ferro (First-Team Coach): Worked at Benfica’s Academy from 2006 and 2009, when Amorim was a player there. Reunited with him at Sporting, when Amorim became Head Coach there.
  • Paulo Barreira (Physical Performance Coach): Knows England well, having been a Physio at Liverpool and Arsenal – as well as doing a PhD at Liverpool John Moores University. After leaving Arsenal, he worked in Saudi Arabia and the UAE before linking up with Amorim at Sporting in 2020.
